Did the city of Ai exist after Joshua destroyed it?
Joshua 8:28 says Joshua burned Ai and made it "an heap for ever, even a desolation unto this day," but Nehemiah 7:32 lists 123 men of Bethel and Ai among those returning from Babylonian exile — meaning a populated Ai existed roughly a thousand years later.
Critical scholarship: Widely regarded as a genuine contradiction.
