Joel 2:32

It will happen that whoever will call on Yahweh’s name shall be saved; for in Mount Zion and in Jerusalem there will be those who escape, as Yahweh has said, and among the remnant, those whom Yahweh calls.

On the fulfillment reading, Paul's application of Joel 2:32 to Jesus is among the strongest NT divine-identity claims: if calling on YHWH's name saves in Joel and calling on Jesus as Lord saves in Romans 10, then Jesus is understood to share the divine identity and bear the divine name. Interpreters see the kyrios usage not as a linguistic accident but as reflecting the early church's conviction about who Jesus is. They also point to Peter's Pentecost citation of Joel (Acts 2:21) as apostolic application of the passage in a Christ-centered setting. On this view Joel's promise of eschatological salvation to all who invoke the name is fulfilled as that name is confessed over Jesus.

On the critical reading, Joel 2:32 concerns eschatological deliverance for those who call on YHWH in Zion and Jerusalem during the day of the LORD, with YHWH as its referent. Paul's transfer to Christ in Romans 10:13 works through the Greek kyrios, which the Septuagint uses for the divine name and which early Christians also applied to Jesus; the double sense of the word enables the shift. Regarding Acts 2, the Joel citation is still framed around the day of the Lord and the Spirit's outpouring, with the explicit 'Lord and Messiah' identification arriving only later (Acts 2:36). On this view the christological reading is a Lukan and Pauline development read back onto Joel rather than a feature of Joel's own text.
