David assembled the children of Aaron, and the Levites--The children of Aaron were the two priests (Ch1 15:11), Zadok and Abiathar, heads of the two priestly houses of Eleazar and Ithamar, and colleagues in the high priesthood (Sa2 20:25). The Levites were the chiefs of their father's house (Ch1 15:12); four belonging to the Kohathite branch, on whose shoulders the ark was to be borne; namely, Uriel, Shemaiah--descended from Elizaphan or Elzaphan-- (Exo 6:22), Hebron (Exo 6:18; Ch1 6:2), and Amminadab from Uzziel (Exo 6:22).

5. the sons of Kohath: Uriel] Kohath had four sons (Exo_6:18 = 1Ch_6:18) Amram, Izhar, Hebron, and Uzziel. Here the descendants of Amram (exclusive of the priests, the Aaronites) represented by Uriel head the list (1Ch_15:5), and the descendants of Izhar, Hebron, and Uzziel appear in 1Ch_15:8-10 respectively. Elizaphan (1Ch_15:8), either stands for the Izhar of Exo_6:18, or is the name of some prominent descendant of Izhar after whom the whole family was named. As regards number the Kohathites were 512 against 350 of the sons of Merari and the sons of Gershom combined. In 1Ch_6:60-63 (45–48 Heb. division) 23 cities are reckoned to Kohath against 25 to Merari and Gershom combined. The Kohathites formed the largest and most important of the three divisions of the Levites.

The Levites—i.e., the six chieftains—Uriel, Asaiah, Joel, heads of the clans of Kohath, Merari, and Gershom respectively; and Shemaiah, Eliel, and Amminadab, additional Kohathite chiefs: all the six being at the head of their clansmen (“brethren,” 1Ch_15:5-10). There were four Kohathite houses to one of Merari and Gershom, because the sub-tribe of Kohath was the elder house, and had special charge of the Ark and other most holy vessels of the sanctuary (Num_4:4).

Vers. 4-11. This classification of the children of Aaron, as the special priests, and of the Levites, is constantly observed. (1Ch_12:26, 27 27:17) The mention of the six representative Levitical families follows. That of Kohath (ver. 5) takes the lead, because, though second in order of (Gen_46:11; Exo_6:16-19; 1Ch_6:1-30) its priestly importance gave it always first rank. To the same head belonged also three of the remaining five families, viz. Hebron (ver. 9) and Uzziel (ver. 10), who were brothers, as being beth sons of Kohath; (Exo_6:18) and Elizaphan, who, though son of Uzziel, (Exo_6:22) had come to represent a distinct family. (Num_3:30) The other two required to complete the six are Asaiah (ver. 6) of the house of Merari, and Joel (ver. 7) of the house of Gershom. The representatives, then, of these six families, with the company of the brethren belonging to each of them, and the two priests Zadok and Abiathar (ver. 11), are now summoned into the presence of David, to receive a short but special charge.
