1. The houses of the porch, so called because they went through the porch into them. Or rather,

The houses of the temple, manifestly understood in the next foregoing clause of this verse, to wit, the holy place, and the holy of holies; which may well pass for two houses, because they were separated by a partition; and because they were of differing dimensions, as appears by 1Ki 6:2,20, especially seeing the holy place is called the greater house, 2Ch 3:5, comparatively to the holy of holies, which was the lesser house, and so you have two houses.
The inner parlours thereof; by these he seems to understand all those rooms which were made against the wall of the house round about, as it is said, 1Ki 6:5, which are here called by divers names, according to the difference of their situation or use.

As for the general charge that David gave his son to seek God and serve him, the book of the law was, in that, his only rule, and there needed no other; but, in building the temple, David was now to give him three things: - 1. A model of the building, because it was to be such a building as neither he nor his architects ever saw. Moses had a pattern of the tabernacle shown him in the mount (Heb 8:5), so had David of the temple, by the immediate hand of God upon him, Ch1 28:19. It was given him in writing, probably by the ministry of an angel, or as clearly and exactly represented to his mind as if it had been in writing. But it is said (Ch1 28:12), He had this pattern by the Spirit. The contrivance either of David's devotion or of Solomon's wisdom must not be trusted to in an affair of this nature. The temple must be a sacred thing and a type of Christ; there must be in it not only convenience and decency, but significancy: it was a kind of sacrament, and therefore it must not be left to man's art or invention to contrive it, but must be framed by divine institution. Christ the true temple, the church the gospel temple, and heaven the everlasting temple, are all framed according to the divine councils, and the plan laid in the divine wisdom, ordained before the world for God's glory and ours. This pattern David gave to Solomon, that he might know what to provide and might go by a certain rule. When Christ left with his disciples a charge to build his gospel church he gave them an exact model of it, ordering them to observe that, and that only, which he commanded. The particular models are here mentioned, of the porch, which was higher than the rest, like a steeple, - then the houses, both the holy place and the most holy, with the rooms adjoining, which were for treasuries, chambers, and parlours, - especially the place of the mercy-seat (Ch1 28:11), - of the courts likewise, and the chambers about them, in which the dedicated things were laid up. Bishop Patrick supposes that, among other things, the tabernacle which Moses reared and all the utensils of it, which there was now no further occasion for, were laid up here, signifying that in the fulness of time all the Mosaic economy, all the rites and ceremonies of that dispensation, should be respectfully laid aside, and something better come in their room. He gave him a table of the courses of the priests, patterns of the vessels of service (Ch1 28:13), and a pattern of the chariot of the cherubim, Ch1 28:18. Besides the two cherubim over the mercy-seat, there were two much larger, whose wings reached from wall to wall (Kg1 6:23, etc.), and of these David here gave Solomon the pattern, called a chariot; for the angels are the chariots of God, Psa 68:17. 2. Materials for the most costly of the utensils of the temple. That they might not be made any less than the patterns, he weighed out the exact quantity for each vessel both of gold and silver, Ch1 28:14. In the tabernacle there was but one golden candlestick; in the temple there were ten (Kg1 7:49), besides silver ones, which, it is supposed, were hand-candlesticks, Ch1 28:15. In the tabernacle there was but one table; but in the temple, besides that on which the show-bread was set, there were ten others for other uses (Ch2 4:8), besides silver tables; for, this house being much larger than that, it would look bare if it had not furniture proportionable. The gold for the altar of incense is particularly said to be refined gold (Ch1 28:18), purer than any of the rest; for that was typical of the intercession of Christ, than which nothing is more pure and perfect. 3. Directions which way to look for help in this great undertaking. "Fear not opposition; fear not the charge, care, and trouble; fear not miscarrying in it, as in the case of Uzza; fear not the reproach of the foolish builder, that began to build and was not able to finish. Be not dismayed. (1.) God will help thee, and thou must look up to him in the first place (Ch1 28:20): The Lord God, even my God, whom I have chosen and served, who has all along been present with me and prospered me, and to whom, from my own experience of his power and goodness, I recommend thee, he will be with thee, to direct, strengthen, and prosper thee; he will not fail thee nor forsake thee." Note, We may be sure that God, who owned our fathers and carried them through the services of their day, will, in like manner, if we be faithful to him, go along with us in our day, and will never leave us, while he has any work to do in us or by us. The same that was Joshua's encouragement (Jos 1:5), and Solomon's, is given to all believers, Heb 13:5. He will never leave thee, nor forsake thee. God never leaves any unless they first leave him. (2.) "Good men will help thee, Ch1 28:21. The priests and Levites will advise thee, and thou mayest consult them. Thou hast good workmen, who are both willing and skilful;" and these are two very good properties in a workman, especially in those that work at the temple. And, lastly, "The princes and the people will be so far from opposing or retarding the work that they will be wholly at thy command, every one in his place ready to further it." Then good work is likely to go on when all parties concerned are hearty in it, and none secretly clog it, but all drive on heartily in it.

The houses thereof — The two main rooms, the holy place and the holy of holies, called in 1Ki_6:17; 1Ki_6:27, respectively “the house” and “the inner house.”
The treasuries — These were probably located in some of the side chambers.
The upper chambers — These are mentioned again in 2Ch_3:9, and are probably to be understood of the upper tier or story of the side chambers, mentioned in 1Ki_6:5. Bertheau thinks they were over the most holy place, which, being twenty cubits every way, left a vacant space above of twenty cubits square and ten cubits high. But the place above the oracle would have been most likely left in darkness, and the plan of the temple as given in 1 Kings 6, shows no way of access to it.
The inner parlours thereof — These were probably the more private apartments of the middle and lower stories of the side chambers.
The place of the mercy seat — Hebrew, house of the capporeth; that is, the oracle, or holy of holies. See on 1Ki_6:20.

The porch.—See 1Ki_6:3. The Syriac has prûstidê: i.e., παραστάδες, colonnade, portico.
The houses thereof.—Its—i.e., the Temple’s—chambers. Throughout this verse the word thereof refers to the house mentioned in 1Ch_28:10. The two principal rooms of the Temple, the “holy place” and the “Holy of holies,” or, as we might say, the nave and the chancel, are called its “houses” (bâttîm).
The treasuries (ganzakkim), occurring here only. It appears to be a loan word from the Persian (ghanj, treasure, treasury; comp. the Latin and Greek gaza, treasure. In old Persian ka was a noun-ending; comp. bandaka, servant). With the singular, ganzak, comp. Persian Ghanjak (the classical Gazaca), the capital of Atropatene, which was a treasure-city. (Comp. also the word ginzê; Est_3:9; Est_4:7; Ezr_7:20, and ginzayyâ, Ezr_5:17; Ezr_6:1, meaning treasures.) Gesenius (Thesaur., p. 296) assumes that the root G N Z has passed from Semitic into Persian, and not vice versâ. This may be true, as the root exists in the principal Semitic tongues, and yet it may be that ganzak in Hebrew is a modern loan word. The “treasuries” or store-rooms of the Temple were probably in the side-building of three storeys (1Ki_6:5).
The upper chambers (‘alîyôth).—Only here and in 2Ch_3:9. They were probably over the Holy of holies, the ceiling of which was twenty cubits from the floor, whereas the roof of the whole building was thirty cubits from the ground. A space of ten cubits high by twenty wide and twenty long was thus available for the upper chambers.
The inner parlours.—The fore-court, or vestibule, and the holy place, or nave, in contrast with “the place of the mercy-seat,” or chamber of the Kappôreth: i.e., the Holy of holies, the inmost shrine of the whole bolding.

Vers. 11-19. These hints respecting the parts of the building that was to be, and respecting the furniture of it, will come in for fuller consideration in the fuller treatment of them, found in the narration of the actual construction of the building in 2 Chronicles compared with 2Ki 6., etc. It is evident that David desired to make a solemn and set business of handing over even the patterns and plans. Nor is this under any circumstances wonderful, but least of all considering their Divine origin. The Divine original of the tabernacle and all its belongings (Ex 25 Heb_8:5) was not to be a neglected precedent as regards the greater temple. It is said that "David gave" these "patterns to Solomon his son" (ver. 11), and the form in which he gave them is explained in ver. 19. There we read, "The whole in writing from the hand of Jehovah upon me, he made me to.understand all the works of this pattern." Whatever we generally accept respecting the writing of the tables of the Law by the finger of God (Exo_24:12 Exo_31:18 Exo_32:15, Exo_32:16; Deu_4:13 Deu_5:5, 22 9:10) is at all events open for acceptance here. At the same time, the phraseology of our nineteenth verse is certainly not so uncompromising-as that of the references just instanced from the Books of Exodus and Deuteronomy. The words of ver. 19 may be satisfied by the meaning that David was in such manner and degree "in the Spirit", (Rev_1:10) that in the writing and the drawing of patterns his hand was entirely under the guidance of that Spirit. In either alternative, to hand over such documents and such "patterns" must have been felt by David and all present an act of which much should be made. The patterns of six parts of the future building are here delivered over to Solomon.

3. The houses thereof; i.e. not of the porch, but of the whole building; wyTB Septuagint, twn oikwn aujtou. The word "houses" in this place designates the" greater house," or" temple," or holy place of 2Ch_3:5; 1Ki_6:5, 1Ki_6:17; and the "inner house," or "oracle," or "most holy house," or "holy of holies, of 2Ch_3:8; 1Ki_6:19-27.
1. The treasuries thereof; wyKznn," a word found only here in this form, with a Chaldee termination in Septuagint, twn zakcwn aujtou.
2. The treasuries were chambers for receiving gifts, and storing the treasures new or old of the temple. Which of the rooms that were built against the sides of the temple were set apart as these treasure-chambers is not known. Perhaps they were the three-storied wings of the temple. (1Ki_6:5)

Vers. 11-21.
The way to succeed in a great work.
David"s heart was set on his son"s successful discharge of the high mission to which God had called him. That nothing should be left undone, so far as he himself was concerned, he gave this inspiriting charge. It will suggest to us the constant condition of successful work in the kingdom of Christ.
I CARRYING OUT DIVINE DIRECTIONS. David formally entrusted to his son "the pattern of all that he had by the Spirit "(ver. 12) all that the Lord made him understand etc. (ver. 19); particulars of the temple furniture, which was to be made after the mind and according to the will of him who was to be worshipped in its "most holy-place." When we enter upon any great enterprise for God, whether we "arise and build," or whether we go forth and preach, or whether we organize and establish, we must seek to act according to Divine instructions. But we must not now look for patterns, but for principles. In our New Testament we have the broad principles of all holy action, of all Christian association, of all missionary enterprise. These are not far from sight, and if we honestly and earnestly seek them, we shall find them and may apply them.
II GAINING DIVINE HELP. "The Lord God will be with thee he will not fail thee, nor forsake thee" (ver. 20). If we proceed in a devoted and prayerful spirit, we may claim these words as applicable to ourselves. We want, and can secure:
1. The inspiration which will prompt us to faithful work.
2. The effectuating power which will make our work succeed and endure.
3. The upholding grace which will carry us through all difficulties to theend.
III SECURING HUMAN CO-OPERATION. Solomon would receive
(1) help in material from the rich stores of his father (vers. 13-18);
(2) the sympathy and assistance of
(a) priests and Levites,
(b) skilful workmen,
(c) the people generally, from the prince to the peasant (ver. 21).
We must not aspire to do God"s work alone; it is in every way better that we should share the privilege and the responsibility with others. It is so for our own sake, for theirs, and also for the sake of the more perfect accomplishment of the work itself. We may ask and accept aid in material and in men; from those whose special function it is to render service in sacred things ("priests and Levites"), and those who are not thus professionally obligated; from those who are "skilful" as well as "willing" (ver. 20), and from those who are willing but have skill to acquire, who will gain something of skilfulness in Christian work by taking a humble part in the work in hand; from those who are "princes" in social station and religious reputation, and from those who only belong to the "common people;" from all who are willing, and who will act, and thus learn to act more perfectly.
IV MAINTAINING OUR SPIRITUAL STRENGTH. "Be strong and of good courage" (ver. 20). We want the strength which accompanies courage. Timidity is weak; fearlessness is strong. And courage is not merely a matter of strong nerves; when of the noblest order, it is the outcome of spiritual excellency; it is the fruit of faith in God. "Be strong and of good courage" means this: maintain your integrity before God; abide in Jesus Christ, that his Spirit may abide in you; (Joh_15:4) nourish the sustaining assurance that God is with you, to befriend and inspire you; go forth and hold on in the strength of the Strong and in the wisdom of the Wise, and you will not fail nor be discouraged. "They that wait on the Lord shall renew their strength," etc. C. (Isa_40:31)
Vers. 11-19.
David"s transfer of the patterns to Solomon.
After the solemn charge to the congregation and to Solomon, David handed over to Solomon the patterns of the temple, the enumeration beginning from outside to inside, and from thence to the courts and buildings and the vessels, and they include the minutest details of all pertaining to it. Let us mark the spiritual truths connected with this portion of God"s Word, and they are many. We refer only to a few. First, as to the patterns themselves. How did David get them? They came from "the Lord" (see ver. 19). Secondly, they came by a "writing." Thirdly, they came "through the Spirit," or by Divine inspiration. Fourthly, they came through God"s "hand upon him." These are all important points in the narrative. This great temple of old was a type of the great spiritual temple now the kingdom of God in this world. In a secondary sense it may be taken as the believer himself: "Ye are the temple of the living God." Mark, then, first, everything of a Divine character comes from the Lord himself. The Lord himself is the Architect of his own house, whether it be in a man"s soul or the Church of Christ. Secondly, the Divine pattern of everything spiritual comes through the "writing," the Word of God written. Thirdly, the Holy Spirit is the Divine Communicator of this Word. He speaks through that Word, which is the breath of God. And, lastly, it is through the hand" of the Lord laid upon us that the Word becomes effectual and operative. As David handed the patterns to Solomon, so should these be the patterns handed down now, through the Word and the Spirit, and applied with power by the "hand" of the Lord. Solomon could not lay a single stone, nor make a single beam, nor deviate one hair"s breadth from this pattern thus handed to him. No more may we. There is one truth more in this narrative. It is a very precious one. It is brought before us in the fourteenth verse, and again in 1Ch_29:2-5. "Gold for things of gold, and silver for things to be made of silver, brass for things of brass, iron for things of iron, and wood for things of wood." In other words, whatever golden things were needed, David had the gold provided for them; or whatever things of silver, brass, iron, or wood, David had the silver, brass, iron, and wood ready for them. It is so still in the Church of Christ as well as in the individual Christian"s own history. What is our need? Do we occupy a golden position, or one of iron or wood? In Christ, the true David, there is the fulness to meet it. There is all we need for every position, every duty, every want, every hour of need. These needs may be great or small, lofty or lowly, corresponding to the "gold" or the wood;" but he has exactly what is suited to meet the emergency or the need, whatever it may be: "My God shall supply all your need out of his riches in glory by Christ Jesus." Patterns
Some men can only give outlines, hints, suggestions, patterns. These men are of great consequence and value in the education of the human mind. A hint may be a stimulus. Let it not be supposed that men are doing nothing for the race who write its poems, outline its policies, or sketch new outlines of possible service. The builders could not proceed without the architect. (J. Parker, D. D.)
Counsels to ministers
1. The pattern of the porch. Tell the sinner to come to Christ just as he is; do not begin setting up some fine porch of feelings or preparations.
2. And the houses thereof. Get a clear view of the houses Christ gives His people to dwell in; how they dwell in Him, how they abide in Him, and go no more out for ever.
3. And the treasures thereof. When you preach Christ pray to have written on your heart, as well as in this book, something about the treasures of Gods house. Preach to others of the treasures of the temple of salvation.
4. And of the upper chambers thereof. In these upper chambers you get a view of the glory yet to be revealed.
5. And of the inner parlours thereof. There are sweet fellowships, there are communings which nobody knows but the man who has dwelt where Jesus is, and who continues to abide in Him. (C. H. Spurgeon.)
