westward thou shalt make six boards; so that the breadth of the tabernacle was but nine cubits, or four yards and a half, according to a common cubit; but two boards more placed at the two corners of the sides, next observed, added to the breadth of it.

The second side the north side. The north side, or left hand, was always regarded as less honourable than the south side or right hand, (see Gen_48:13-20) probably because in the northern hemisphere the sun illumines the south side. It showed the superior dignity of the south side that the golden candlestick was set against it. (Exo_40:24)
