The chambers were in the thickness of the wall of the court toward the east,.... As there were chambers in the northern part of the outward court, some which looked to the north, and others to the south, so likewise some to the east; and these were built on the breadth, as it may be rendered, of the court wall to the east; signifying there will be churches raised in all the northern parts of the world:
over against the separate place, and over against the building; as the other chambers were; See Gill on Eze 42:1.

10. thickness of the wall] Probably: at the beginning (or, head) of the wall (cf. Eze_42:12). The “wall” is that piece of wall referred to Eze_42:7, and the “beginning of it” is the point where the way enters from the outer court, Fig. 3, P. In Eze_46:19 this is stated to have been at the shoulder (the long side) of the N. gate. It is said that the doors into the chambers were from the “walk” of 100 cubits long fronting the longer wing (Fig. 3, O), and possibly also that this walk led into the inner court (Eze_42:4), consequently the entrance-way from the outer court must have lain as far east as the end of this “walk,” which it led to and so reached the chambers. The area of 100 × 50 on which the cells stood, though not wholly covered by the cells, must have been in some way marked off from the general level of the court, and the entrance-way from the outer court was on the east front of it; and it was probably in this entrance-way that the prophet had his position (Eze_42:1-9), Fig. 3. Q.
10. For “east” must be read south, according to Eze_42:12-13 and the whole scope; cf. Ezek. 44:44. The “building” as in Eze_42:1 is the wall of the outer court with its stories of cells, Fig. 3, B, C. On the one side the chambers faced the separate place, and on the other side the shorter wing looked towards the buildings in the outer court.

10–12. The corresponding chambers on the south side of the temple-house. The text is undoubtedly in great confusion; and has been amended in various ways. Taken as nearly as possible as it stands it reads: “Towards the south, over against the separate place and over against the (wall-) building, there were chambers, 11 with a way before them, like the appearance of the chambers which were towards the north, as long as they and as broad as they, and according to all their goings out, and according to their fashions. And according to their doors, 12 so were the doors of the chambers that were toward the south; there was a door at the beginning of the way, to wit the way before the corresponding (?) wall, on the east as one entereth into them.”

Vers. 10-12 A similar suite of chambers, corresponding in every detail, is depicted as having stood upon the south side of the temple and in front of the gizrah. The only question among interpreters is whether ver. 10 relates to the north or south suite, or to an east suite. Schroder and Currey see in ver. 10 a repetition, from another point of view, of what has already been stated about the north chambers, viz. that, viewed from the outer court, they appeared in the thickness or breadth of the wall (ver. 7) and (lengthwise) over against the separate place and the buildings, i.e. the gizrah and the temple. Ewald, Smend, and Keil decide that ver. 10 forms part of the description of a south set of chambers only; but in order to make this good they alter the text by substituting south," for "the east." Plumptre agrees with Kliefoth and Hengstenberg in holding that two similar sets of chambers are described, one on the east side and one on the south side of the inner court wall. The principal objection to this is the fact that only two suites, the north and the south, are referred to by the guide in vers. 13 and 14.
