Eze 48:13-14. Over against the border of the priests — It might be better translated, just by, or beside the border of the priests. The words import, that the border of the Levites should run parallel to that of the priests. And in the same sense the words should be translated in the 15th, 18th, and 21st verses of this chapter. And they shall not sell it, neither exchange — Or, transfer, &c. As it was God’s portion, they were not to sell, or part with it, upon any pretence of advantage, or of greater convenience. This portion of land is called the first-fruits, as it is styled an oblation, Eze 48:8; Eze 48:12, to denote that the whole land was God’s property.

(14) Shall not sell of it.—The Levites’ portion (Eze_48:13) was of the same size as that of the priests, instead of their having (as under the law) nearly three times as many cities, and the restriction of Lev_25:34 that they might not even temporarily alienate the fields attached to their cities, is here extended to their whole land on the express ground that it is “first-fruits.”

Vers. 13, 14 The Levites" portion is next described by its situation, as lying over against tMul, "at or near," answerable to (Revised Version), parallel with (Keil)the border of the priests; by its dimensions, as twenty-five thousand reeds in length, from east to west, and ten thousand reeds in breadth, or from north to south, i.e. it should be as large as the priests" portion in point of fact larger, since the space necessary for the sanctuary required to be deducted from the former; by its tenure, which was such that the Levites could neither sell, exchange, nor alienate it, any more than under the Law the Levites could sell the field of the suburbs or pasture-lands of their cities; (Lev_25:34) and by its character, which, as consisting of the firstfruits of the land, i.e. of the first portion of the land heaved up or presented in offering, (see Eze_45:1) was holy unto the Lord (cf. Eze_44:30) The changes in the text made by the LXX and favored by Hitzig and Smend the Levites" instead of "the Levites" (ver. 13), and "twenty" instead of "ten thousand" (ver. 13) are unnecessary.

"this land which is the firstfruits." Here "firstfruits" probably means the best things among all the offerings set aside to give to God. This land is spoken of in that way, as land set aside for Yahweh's use. (See: Metaphor)
