This seems to be the name of a place, where the descendants of Josue and Joab might reside; (chap. viii. 4.; Calmet) or Phahath might have this title, on account of some victory, or residence in the country. His descendants, with those of Josue and Joab, where 2812, (Tirinus) or 2818, 2 Esdras vii. 11. (Calmet) --- Josue. Protestants, "Jeshua and Joab." 6. The children of Pahath-moab, of the children of Jeshua and Joab] Pahath = ruler of. We must suppose that the founder of this family had exercised rule over some portion of the Moabite territory. We learn from 1Ch_4:22 that certain members of the tribe of Judah ‘had the dominion in Moab’. Probably this family belonged to the tribe of Judah. The word Pahath was commonly in use in Assyria, and is similar to the term for ‘governor’. Part of this family returned with Ezra (Ezr_8:4): certain members of it are mentioned in Ezr_10:30; Neh_3:11.
