And there shall be no remnant.] Behold the severity of God: their bloody design was to destroy Jeremiah’s stock and fruit, stalk and grain together. {Jer 11:19} God meteth unto them the self-same measure, leaveth them not a remnant. He ventures to expostulate with Jehovah as to the prosperity of the wicked, who had plotted against his life (Jer 12:1-4); in reply he is told that he will have worse to endure, and that from his own relatives (Jer 12:5-6). The heaviest judgments, however, would be inflicted on the faithless people (Jer 12:7-13); and then on the nations co-operating with the Chaldeans against Judah, with, however, a promise of mercy on repentance (Jer 12:14-17).

(23) There shall be no remnant of them.—In Ezr_2:23; Neh_7:27 we find that 128 of Anathoth returned from exile. The words must therefore be limited either to the men who had conspired against the prophet, or to the complete deportation of its inhabitants. The situation of Anathoth, about three or four miles north-east of Jerusalem, would expose it to the full fury of the invasion. The words are apparently spoken with reference to the ever-recurring burden of Isaiah’s prophecy that “a remnant “should return (Isa_1:9; Isa_6:13; Isa_10:21). The conspirators of Anathoth were excluded from that promise.
