Lev 7:34. The wave-breast, and the heave-shoulder — Hebrew, The breast of elevation, and the shoulder of exaltation; that is, those parts which are consecrated to me by lifting, or heaving them up toward heaven. The breast or heart is the seat of wisdom; and the shoulder, of strength for action; and these two may denote that wisdom and power which were in Christ our High-Priest, and which ought to be in every priest. They also signify that God is to be served with all our heart, mind, and strength. By a statute for ever — An ordinance to continue so long as the law of sacrifice should remain. And the equity of it remains still; for as they who waited at the altar were partakers with the altar, even so hath the Lord ordained that those who preach the gospel should live by the gospel, 1Co 9:13-14. In other words, the ministers of Christ, who devote their time and labours to his service and that of the public, have a right to be maintained by the public.

32. the right thigh] not ‘shoulder’ as mg. The plural ‘ye’ indicates the composite character of this section. The right thigh was a further due of the priests, given to the officiating priest, as well as the breast, which was given to Aaron and his sons for ever (Lev_7:34).
The priestly dues seem to have gradually increased. According to 1Sa_2:13 ff. the worshipper was apparently allowed to decide for himself how much to give. The priestly portion assigned in 1Sa_9:24 to Saul as a mark of honour was ‘the thigh, and the fat tail.’ (See note on p. 12.) The legislation of Deut. (Deu_18:3) gives the priest ‘the shoulder, and the two cheeks, and the maw.’ But here (cp. Lev_10:14 f.; Exo_29:27 f.) he was still better off with the wave breast and right thigh.

The wave breast and the heave shoulder were to be the priests", as well as the meat offering (verse 10) and other portions. Thus is taught the lesson, enforced by St. Paul, (1Co_9:13, 1Co_9:14) "Do ye not know that they which minister about holy things live of the things of the temple? and they which wait at the altar are partakers with the altar? Even so hath the Lord ordained that they which preach the gospel should live of the gospel." The adequate maintenance of the Levitical priesthood was carefully provided for under the old dispensation by means of offerings and of tithes; and "the labourer is worthy of his hire", (Luk_10:7) and "let him that is taught in the Word communicate unto him that teacheth in all good things", (Gal_6:6) are principles of the new dispensation likewise.

7:34 breast of the special offering . . . right thigh of the sacred offering: The peace offering was a shared meal between God, the priest, the worshiper, and guests. The breast (in some older translations called a “wave offering”) and thigh (sometimes called the “contribution” or “heave offering”) were specifically designated as the priest’s portion (see 10:13-15). After these offerings were taken into the Tabernacle and presented before the Lord, they could then be eaten (see Exod 29:24, 26).
