Ver. 12-24.] In all 1192. The total of priests and Levites 1476, and of Judah and Benjamin 1396. So that there were more priests and Levites than of the lay people; which argues their zeal to be greatest. There were also 172 porters, who were all Levites.

Their brethren that did the work of the house. The priests of ordinary rank, who divided originally into twenty-four, but now apparently into twenty-two, courses (Neh_12:2-7) had the care of the temple service in turn, amounted to the large number of (822+242+ 128 ) 1192 persons, of whom between fifty and sixty would be employed in some work connected with the service at one time. (The parallel passage of Chronicles raises the total to 1760.)
