The families of the Levites are here numbered by themselves, because they were not to have a distinct share of the land, whence it is that they are not so distinctly and exactly mentioned as the other tribes, but confusedly and imperfectly, some of them being wholly omitted here. See Exo 6:17-19.

Levi was God's tribe, a tribe that was to have no inheritance with the rest in the land of Canaan, and therefore was not numbered with the rest, but by itself; so it had been numbered in the beginning of this book at Mount Sinai, and therefore came not under the sentence passed upon all that were then numbered, that none of them should enter Canaan but Caleb and Joshua; for of the Levites that were not numbered with them, nor were to go forth to war, Eleazar and Ithamar, and perhaps others who were above twenty years old then (as appears, Jos 4:16, 28), entered Canaan; and yet this tribe, now at its second numbering, had increased but 1000, and was still one of the smallest tribes. Mention is made here of the death of Nadab and Abihu for offering strange fire, as before of the sin and punishment of Korah, because these things happened to them for ensamples.

Instead of the completion of the census of the Levite families their sum total is given.

(59) Jochebed, the daughter of Levi, whom her mother bare to Levi . . . —Or, who was born to Levi, &c. There is a similar omission of the subject of the verb in 1Ki_1:6. Some writers have supposed that Jochebed was the granddaughter, or possibly even some more remote descendant of Levi, and that Amram, the father of Moses, was not the same as Amram, the son of Kohath. (See Keil, “On the Pentateuch,” i. 469-471; but for a defence of the view which has been more commonly adopted, see Birks’ “Exodus of Israel,” pp. 153-199.)

These are the families of the Levites. The three Levitical sub-tribes have been named in the preceding verse, and the present enumeration of families is an independent one. The Libnites were Gershonites, (Num_3:21) the Hebronites and Korathites (or Korahites) were Kohathites, (Num_3:19 Num_16:1) the Mahlites and Mushites were Merarites. (Num_3:33) Two other families, the Shimites (Num_3:21) and the Uzzielites, (Num_3:27 1Ch_26:23, and cf. Exo_6:22 1Ch_24:24, 1Ch_24:25) are omitted here, perhaps because the list is imperfect (see, however, the note on verse 62).
