Questions where the Bible appears to say two different things, with the passages on each side set together.
Exodus 20:13 and Deuteronomy 5:17 command 'thou shalt not kill,' and Jesus reaffirms it in Mark 10:19 and Luke 18:20. The same Torah then mandates capital punishment for witches, adulterers, gay men, non-virgin brides, blasphemers, sabbath breakers, and disobedient children.
Critical scholarship: Genuinely disputed among scholars.
Law & ethics
The proposed answers and sources for each reading are on the question page.
1 Samuel 13:9-14 has Samuel telling Saul his dynasty is ended because Saul offered the burnt offering himself instead of waiting. 1 Samuel 15:11, 23 has Yahweh declaring he regrets making Saul king because Saul spared Agag and the best Amalekite livestock instead of completing the genocide.
Critical scholarship: Widely regarded as a genuine contradiction.
Historical detail
The proposed answers and sources for each reading are on the question page.
Esther 3:1 calls Haman "the Agagite," implying descent from Agag the Amalekite king. But 1 Samuel 15:7-8, 32-33 explicitly says Saul and Samuel wiped out every Amalekite man, woman, infant, and suckling, with Samuel personally hacking Agag to pieces.
Critical scholarship: Usually considered reconciled.
