Questions where the Bible appears to say two different things, with the passages on each side set together.
Psalm 14:3, Psalm 53:3, and Paul quoting them at Romans 3:12 say absolutely no one does good — not one. Ecclesiastes 7:20 and Isaiah 64:6 ("all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags") double down.
Critical scholarship: Genuinely disputed among scholars.

Paul stacks Romans 3:28, Romans 4:13, Galatians 2:16, Galatians 3:11-12, and Ephesians 2:8-9 to insist humans are justified by faith apart from works of the law. Then Matthew 19:17 ("keep the commandments"), Matthew 25:31-46 (sheep and goats judged on what they did), Romans 2:6 and 2:13 (Paul himself!), James 2:14-26 ("faith without works is dead"), and Revelation 20:12-13 (judged according to works) all push the opposite direction.
Critical scholarship: Genuinely disputed among scholars.

John 5:22, John 5:26-27, John 9:39, Acts 17:31, 2 Corinthians 5:10, and Revelation 19:11 say Jesus judges everyone, with the Father committing all judgment to the Son. John 8:15 and John 12:47 have Jesus himself say "I judge no man" and "I came not to judge the world, but to save the world."
Critical scholarship: Leans toward reconciliation.

Proverbs 11:31 declares that the righteous are recompensed in the earth — "much more the wicked and the sinner." The traditional Deuteronomic-Wisdom theology underwrites this: divine justice operates within the temporal frame of this life.
Critical scholarship: Widely regarded as a genuine contradiction.

Each section sets the viewpoints side by side; you weigh the evidence. Here, "critical scholarship" means academic study, not a value judgment. How this is built →
