  • Why was the Sabbath instituted?

    The two versions of the Decalogue give incompatible etiologies for the Sabbath. Exodus 20:11 grounds it in creation — Yahweh rested on the seventh day after making the heavens and earth, and Israel is commanded to keep the Sabbath because God did.
