Luke 14:26 has Jesus state baldly that no one can be his disciple without hating father, mother, wife, children, brothers, sisters, and his own life. Ephesians, by contrast, commands honoring father and mother as the first commandment with promise (6:2), commands husbands to love their wives as Christ loved the church (5:25), and observes that no one ever hated his own flesh (5:29).
