    Was Jesus taken to Caiaphas or Annas first?

    Matthew 26:57 names Caiaphas explicitly as the high priest Jesus was led to. Mark 14:53 and Luke 22:54 say Jesus was led to 'the high priest,' which in context means Caiaphas, since he was the sitting high priest in 30-36 CE.

    Critical scholarship: Leans toward reconciliation.

      Harmonization: Plummer reads John as alone recording the examination before Annas, quietly supplementing the others’ account rather than contradicting it.

      The tension: Strauss reads the synoptics as taking Jesus straight to the high priest where John takes him first to Annas, only later to Caiaphas.
