  • Did Jesus heal Peter's mother in law before or after calling Peter?

    Luke 4:38-39 has Jesus heal Peter's mother-in-law before Peter is called to discipleship in Luke 5:10-11. Matthew 4:18-19 reverses this — Peter is called at the lakeside first, and only later (Matthew 8:14-15) does Jesus heal his mother-in-law.

    Critical scholarship: Widely regarded as a genuine contradiction.

  • How did Peter and Andrew become Jesus's disciples?

    Mark 1:16-17 and Matthew 4:18-19 have Jesus call Peter and Andrew while they are casting nets at the Sea of Galilee. John 1:35-42 has Andrew already a disciple of John the Baptist who, after hearing John identify Jesus as the Lamb of God, follows Jesus on his own and then brings Peter.

    Critical scholarship: Widely regarded as a genuine contradiction.
