Was John the Baptist Elijah?
In Matthew 11:14 Jesus says of John the Baptist: "this is Elijah, which was for to come," and Matthew 17:12-13 makes the identification explicit — the disciples "understood that he spake unto them of John the Baptist." Luke 7:24-27 confirms the same identification via Malachi 3:1.
