Matthew 17:22-23 reports the disciples' reaction to Jesus' second passion prediction: "they were exceeding sorry" (*elypēthēsan sphodra*), indicating comprehension — they understood the message well enough to grieve. The Markan parallel (Mark 9:30-31) and Lukan parallel (Luke 9:44-45) report the opposite: "they understood not that saying, and were afraid to ask him" / "they understood not this saying, and it was hid from them."
