The Bible offers four mutually incompatible afterlife schemes. The apocalyptic strand (Daniel 12, Matthew, Mark, Luke, 2 Thessalonians, Hebrews, Jude, Revelation) describes eternal conscious torment.

Is annihilation or endless misery the portion of manking?
Job 3, Ecclesiastes 9:5, 10, and Ecclesiastes 3:19-20 articulate a thoroughgoing annihilationist anthropology — the dead know nothing, all go to dust, man has no preeminence above a beast, the grave is silence. Matthew 25:46, Revelation 20:10, 14:11, 20:15, and Daniel 12:2 articulate eternal conscious torment — everlasting punishment, smoke of torment rising forever, the lake of fire, awakening to everlasting shame.
Critical scholarship: Widely regarded as a genuine contradiction.
