    John 15:13 and 10:11 describe Jesus laying down his life for his friends (philoi) and for the sheep — the in-group, the disciples, those who love him. Romans 5:10 says "when we were enemies (echthroi), we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son" — the death was for those who were hostile to God, not those who were loyal.
