What current science says

This is an interesting case where someone tried to harmonize scripture with science. The evolutionary timeline does show physical forms developing first: single-celled life for billions of years, then complex bodies, then nervous systems, then brains capable of abstract thought. Whether 'spiritual awareness' is a useful scientific category is debatable, but the sequence of 'bodies first, complex cognition later' does match the fossil record. However, this reading requires ignoring that the same author (Paul) elsewhere insists on a literal first man, a literal fall, and literal death entering through sin — claims that directly contradict evolution. Cherry-picking compatible verses while ignoring incompatible ones from the same author isn't a scientific methodology.

What the text says

This comes from 1 Corinthians 15:46, which says 'that was not first which is spiritual, but that which is natural; and afterward that which is spiritual.' Asa Gray, the leading American botanist of the 19th century and Darwin's close friend, used this verse to argue that the bible is not inconsistent with evolution.
