35. as a snare] Ecc_9:12 “as the fishes that are taken in an evil net, and as the birds that are caught in the snare, so are the sons of men snared in an evil time.” There is the same metaphor in Isa_24:17. The common metaphor is “as a thief” 1Th_5:3; Rev_3:3; Rev_16:15; but St Paul uses this metaphor also, Rom_11:9; 1Ti_3:7.
them that dwell] Literally, “them that sit.” A Hebraism (Gen_19:30, &c.), but perhaps with the collateral notion of ‘sitting at ease,’ Jer_8:14; Jer_25:29 (LXX.). ‘Face of the earth’ is also a Hebraism, 2Sa_18:8.

(35) As a snare . . .—The word is not found in the other Gospels, but is used several times by St. Paul (Rom_11:9; 1Ti_3:7; 1Ti_6:9; 2Ti_2:26).
Them that dwell . . .—Elsewhere in the New Testament, the verb is used in its literal meaning of “sitting.” In the sense of “dwelling” or “residing,” we find it, probably, again in Act_2:2.
