Leviticus 19:34 and Deuteronomy 10:19 command Israel to love the stranger (ger) as themselves, remembering that they were strangers in Egypt. Deuteronomy 7:2, however, commands utter destruction and no mercy for the Canaanite nations Israel is displacing.

How should the Canaanites be treated?
The Pentateuch and Joshua give four incompatible answers about what Israel was to do with the Canaanites. God promises to drive them out himself via hornets and an angel (Exodus 23, 33-34; Josh 3, 13, 23).
