How did Peter find out that Jesus was the Messiah?
Matthew 16:16-17 has Peter confess Jesus as "the Christ, the Son of the living God" at Caesarea Philippi, and Jesus explicitly tells Peter this knowledge came directly by divine revelation: "flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven." John 1:40-41 has Peter learn the identification from a human source: his brother Andrew runs to him and announces, "We have found the Messias."
Critical scholarship: Widely regarded as a genuine contradiction.
