  • Was Jairus's daughter alive when Jesus was approached?

    Mark 5:22-23 and Luke 8:41-42 have the synagogue ruler (Mark and Luke name him Jairus) come to Jesus while his daughter is still alive — "at the point of death" / "a dying." Matthew 9:18 has the same ruler approach Jesus and announce that his daughter is "even now dead" (Greek *arti eteleutēsen*).

    Critical scholarship: Widely regarded as a genuine contradiction.
