What current science says

Leprosy (Hansen's disease) is caused by the slow-growing bacterium Mycobacterium leprae. It has an incubation period of 2 to 10 years — it's one of the slowest-developing diseases known. It definitely doesn't appear instantly on your forehead because you burned the wrong candle. The bacteria are transmitted through prolonged respiratory contact, not through ritual violations. If incense-burning caused leprosy, every spa and yoga studio in the world would be a biohazard zone.

What the text says

This comes from 2 Chronicles 26:19-21. When King Uzziah entered the temple to burn incense — a job reserved for priests — leprosy instantly appeared on his forehead as divine punishment.
