Then the white films peeled away from the corners of his eyes; and he saw his son, and fell upon his neck. He wept, and said, “Blessed are you, O God, and blessed is your name forever! Blessed are all your holy angels! For you scourged, and had mercy on me. Behold, I see my son Tobias.” And his son went in rejoicing, and told his father the great things that had happened to him in Media.
Fish bile rubbed on eyes causes a white film to peel off within 30 minutes, restoring perfect vision.

What current science says
The 'white skin' description sounds like it could be describing a mature cataract — a clouded lens that appears white. But cataracts are inside the eye, behind the iris and pupil. You can't peel them off the surface because they aren't on the surface. If a white film were actually on the corneal surface (like a pterygium or corneal scarring), it would be integrated into the tissue and couldn't simply peel away like eggshell membrane. Modern cataract surgery involves making a tiny incision, using ultrasound to break up the clouded lens, suctioning it out, and inserting an artificial lens — a process requiring microsurgical precision, not fish bile and half an hour of waiting.
What the text says
This comes from the Book of Tobit (Tobias) 11:13-15. After fish gall is rubbed on a blind man's eyes, 'about half an hour' later 'a white skin' peels off 'like the skin of an egg' and he could see again — complete ophthalmological restoration in the time it takes to watch a sitcom episode.
Three honest ways to read this passage
-
As history
The text records how its authors understood the world with the knowledge they had. Read this way, a difference from modern science is a window into the ancient mind, not a failure.
-
As accommodation
The text speaks to its first audience in their own terms, to make a point that isn't mainly about physics or biology. Read this way, the scientific detail is the vehicle, not the cargo.
-
As contradiction
The text makes a claim about the physical world that modern findings dispute. Read this way, the difference is a genuine factual disagreement worth naming.
GEBible doesn't pick one of these for you. Each entry shows the passage, what it says, and what current science says — nothing more.
