Did Jesus ask God to save him from crucifixion?
In the Synoptic Gethsemane scene (Matt 26:36-42, Mark 14:35-36, Luke 22:41-42) Jesus prays explicitly that the cup of suffering pass from him — 'let this cup pass from me,' 'take away this cup from me,' 'remove this cup from me.' The Johannine Jesus in John 12:27 raises the same possibility only to dismiss it instantly: 'shall I say, Father, save me from this hour? but for this cause came I unto this hour.'
Critical scholarship: Leans toward a genuine contradiction.
